Since the release of Issue 1 in October 2003, Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead has turned into one of Image Comics' top-selling monthly titles, with trade paperback editions also selling well and adding to the readership.
The story picks up as we are introduced to Rick Grimes as he wakes up alone in a hospital, unaware that while he was unconscious and recovering, zombies have taken over. He has to figure out if his family is alive and how to survive in this dramatically changed world. Yep, there are elements that are similar to films like Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and the like. However, the fact this is an ongoing series and not a two-hour film allows Kirkman and artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard to explore what happens over the course of a much longer period of time, and in greater detail. Where would surviving humans go to be safe? Can a new civilization be started?
