The 28th Hong Kong Film Award winners were announced on April 19! Wilson Yip's blockbuster martial arts biopic Ip Man won Best Film, but leading man Donnie Yen lost out in the highly contested Best Actor race to The Beast Stalker's Nick Cheung. Ann Hui's critically acclaimed docudrama The Way We Are edged out the big-budget contenders to win Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.
John Woo's war epic Red Cliff won five awards including Best Original Film Score. Gordon Chan's costume fantasy Painted Skin and Benny Chan's action thriller Connected split the remaining technical awards. CJ7 child actress Xu Jiao was named Best New Performer, while Derek Kwok picked up Best New Director for The Moss. Best Asian Film was awarded to Feng Xiaogang's Chinese war blockbuster Assembly.
