Looks like RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE isn’t the only Euro film to put a dark spin on Yuletide this season. A Dutch fright flick called SINT, from veteran writer/director Dick Maas, has slashed its way into the record books on its home release.
Variety reports that SINT has set an opening-week record for a Dutch movie in its native country, taking in $1.3 million from 96 theaters and beating the previous record-holder, Paul Verhoeven’s BLACK BOOK. It also trounced the local releases of such American fright fare as PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 and PIRANHA 3D. Family-friendly films about Sint Nicolaas, as Santa is known in Holland, are common in the country around this time of year, but SINT turns that idea on its (severed) head by presenting a psychopathic Sint (played by Huub Stapel, star of Maas’ 1983 killer-elevator flick THE LIFT and ’88 serial-killer flick AMSTERDAMNED) who murders adults and kidnaps children. Check out the trailer (in Dutch with no subtitles) below.
